Black Snake Affair
In support of Jefferson's 1807 embargo the revenue boat Fly engaged the smuggling boat Black Snake on the Winooski River. Death and injury on both sides horrified Vermont, leading to the state supporting Federalists over Jeffersonian Republicans in the next election.
