Van Ness House Hotel & Green Mountain Club
The Long Trail got its start at the prominent Van Ness House Hotel in Burlington Vermont in 1910. James P. Taylor had the idea for a long-distance hiking trail connecting the high peaks of the Green Mountains. At the hotel, Taylor gathered prominent movers and shakers in Vermont to make that happen. It took many years to realize the vision, with the trail finally completed in 1930. It is the first long-distance hiking trail in the nation and now today, the oldest.
