Care & Preservation

If your organization doesn't have the time, money, or space to care for everything in our collection, it's time to reassess how you're using the resources you do have. The Active Collections framework helps your organization to make tough decisions about which objects deserve the most of your resources. Completing a tier chart is just the first step. Once you’ve determined which objects tell the most meaningful stories about your local history, it’s time to allocate resources accordingly.

It’s okay if you aren’t able to match all the best practices for collections care and preservation; you just need to do the best you can for the objects that are really pulling their weight in your collection.

If your “lazy” objects are taking up more resources than they ought to, it’s also okay to rethink how you allocate time, money, and storage space to these parts of your collection.
