Fletcher Free Library
The original Fletcher Free Library in Burlington was created in the late 1800s thanks to a gift from the Fletcher family. Originally housed in City Hall, it quickly outgrew the space and in the early 1900s Andrew Carnegie gave funding to build a new library. Carnegie was a 19th Century industrialist who saw libraries as essential places for learning and public education. There are four Carnegie public libraries in Vermont, each distinctly representing their community but alike in their monumental building styles.
