Nordic Skis

MADSHUS nordic skis. The top of the skis (a-b) are red and gradiate into white towards the bottom. "MADSHUS" is printed on the top half of both skis as well as on both outside edges of both skis. The top of the skis has a black speckled design around the bindings. On the top of both of the skis is a commemorative note written in black permanent marker. It reads, "Beijing OWG22 Team Sprint/ 1st NCAA 22' 10km." Along with the skis are two ski straps (c-d) to hold the skis together while they are being carried. One is dark blue and branded, "HOLMENKOL" and the other is light blue and branded, "PIONEER MIDWEST".

Used by Ben Ogden in both the 2022 Beijing Olympics as part of Team USA and the 2022 NCAA Skiing Championships with the UVM Ski Team. Ben Ogden grew up in Landgrove, VT.

Racing Suit

Swix brand racing suit. The suit is mostly black with a textured hexagonal pattern across it, a short collar, and a zipper that extends from the waist up to the neck. The left should has a red and white striped pattern and the right shoulder has a white star pattern against a blue backdrop, meant to look like the American flag. The same pattern extends across the legs at an angle with the stars above the stripes. There is a decorative band across the chest with text that reads, "USA/ E - PLURIBUS - UNUM" and a small stylized version of the American flag with stars and stripes, similar to the pattern on the shoulders. This design has a thin white border line above and below it. On the right arm are the vertical letters "USA" in white near the wrist and the left arm has "Swix" printed across the forearm also in white.

Worn by Olympic nordic skier Ben Ogden in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Ben grew up and still lives in Vermont.

Skis

Pair of wooden skis with bear-trap style bindings. The bindings are stamped "DOVRE KABEL" on the hinge. The skis have taped tips and additional blocks added to the backs, with a wooden shoe platform screwed in to help secure leather boots in place. The tape around the tip of each ski is marked "L" or "R" for left or right foot. There are deep grooves carved into the underside of each ski.

These skis were used by Austine School alumnus and internationally renowned Class A ski jumper Herbert Holbrook.

Austine School for the Deaf Brattleboro, VT
Used specifically for ski jumping alongside his boots (see 2024.17.47a-b) by Herbert P. Holbrook, a class A ski jumper and olympic cross-country skier. (see photo in archives) He was an alumnus of the Austine School for the Deaf, and admitted to the AAAD (American Athletic Association for the Deaf) in 1964, when he also made the New York Times News twice that year. He competed in Berchtesgaden (West Germany) in the 60's and in the Meribel Olympics in France in 1979.

Snowshoe

Pair of wooden snowshoes with up-turned toe and rawhide webbing. The framed are formed of a single piece of wood bent into shape and secured with two bars across the middle. The webbing is woven in an open pattern, and the frames are highly varnished. One shoe is marked with the word "Right" in black across from the front crossbar. There are no bindings.

Snowshoe

Wood frame snowshoes laced with rawhide webbing. Leather strap binding. Tufts of red yarn around perimeter denote women's snow shoes. Wool yarn is a substitute for moosehair.

Snowshoe

Tubbs snowshoes, style "Cross Country, 10 x 46". See page 16 of the catalog. Rawhide lacing, neoprene bindings (page 18 of catalog). The bindings are made up of straps that enclose the bood with a wide flap that comes up over the toe of the boot. Bent wooden frame pinned at end.

Snowshoes

Snowshoes with an aluminum frame. The decking, made of Quadex, is a thin plastic material that is securely attached to the frame using plastic webbing. Adjustable nylon straps and a plastic frame are employed at the instep to accommodate different foot sizes and shapes. At the bottom of the instep, there is a metal crampon.
