Context
This epaulet or coat cuff seems a bit earlier than the other beaded items in the Abenaki Cultural Conservancy collection. It sports a close relative of the coeval double scroll designs to the east; and has the distinctive Wabanaki trilobate design in the center of the arcing pinnate scrolls.

This was an amazing discovery; these beads are very distinct with a trail of molten blue glass making a design on a heated white bead background. Bead collectors that I have talked to told me that most went to Africa and Asia, almost never here. So this is an interesting geographic anomaly.

Context
These beaded “Wabanaki Quatrefoil” Epaulets seem a bit later than the other beaded items in the Abenaki Cultural Conservancy collection. The central quatrefoils are identical in color and construction to those found on a pair of moccasin vamps with a Waterville, Vermont provenance. Unfortunately, many of the other stylistic details such as bugle-beaded scrolls and the blue and yellow flowers are unlike other regional items from the period.

Context
This is a beautiful loom-woven beaded headband with white and blue designs reminiscent of the Wabanaki Confederacy double scroll. There is nothing diagnostic about it at all. It was given to Frederick Wiseman at the 1996 Heritage Days Pow Wow by an older Abenaki man who said that it was worn by his mother “many years ago,” which may have put it back before the 1970 Missisquoi Renaissance.
